Most of us Coloradans are well acquainted with the now-iconic Dale’s pale ale and other canned craft beers from Longmont-based Oskar Blues Brewery. What you may not know is that Oskar Blues—one of the state’s largest craft brewers—also dabbles in a slew of other projects, including a line of sodas, a 50-acre farm called Hops & Heifers, a coffee company, and a handful of restaurants. On January 19, Oskar Blues brought two of its “fooderies” to Denver: Hotbox Roasters CBD Cafe and Chubburger RiNo. Although the two concepts are distinct, they share one collective space through which you can pass freely.
While the cheekily named Hotbox CBD Cafe might evoke a different sort of intoxicant, in this case CBD refers to coffee, beer, and doughnuts. You’ll find all three at the roomy Larimer Street location: Fair trade-sourced coffee, which is roasted at Hotbox’s Longmont facility and packaged neatly in Oskar Blues’ Crowlers; beers on-tap; and more than a dozen varieties of doughnuts baked fresh each day. The array of doughnuts includes everything from glazed cake to pillowy yeast-raised to Italian zeppole, but our favorites are the ones the incorporate Oskar Blues’ suds. Jason Rogers, an Oskar Blues Fooderies partner, recommends the Samoa Girl Scout Cookie-esque DBC cake doughnut—a chocolate cake-based creation infused with Death by Coconut porter and dipped in caramel. We also love the sugar-dusted variety filled with pink grapefruit-IPA cream and the cherry-chocolate number infused with Old Chub.
As evening approaches, you might want to swap your nitro cold brew coffee for something stronger. Wander over to Chubburger and grab a seat at the bar, where you can choose from 30 brews and watch the game. You can’t go wrong with an order of the beer-brined wings and a classic Chub burger, which is made with grass-fed Angus beef from Oskar Blues’ Longmont farm.
